DIVERSIONS

Updated: Nov 20, 2024

Diversions: Reflecting on unexpected changes in ensemble music during Covid-19, solo adaptation, and the art of embracing uncertainty.
Diversions

If you don’t know what to say its best to say nothing at all ...

Indeed, as we proceed in our journey there are diversions. Usually when and how we least expect them.

As if this year had not already taught me/us this truism IT proceeded to do so again, following my “Satisfaction” post in July, in a determined and ironic fashion .

Corollary to saying nothing : “If you wish to make the gods laugh tell them your plans”

This was already the case with the loss of any live ensemble rehearsals and concerts for this year. However, as we progressed into August and September some hope had emerged in a locally produced on-line streaming concert production. I eagerly took up this opportunity organizing two brass ensemble programs and began scheduling socially distanced rehearsals. This was exciting with rewarding music and new associations that eventually came to an abrupt stop. A member of each ensemble (on the same day) announced that they each needed to relocate, inter-state, in response to the Covid pandemic.

Who says lightening can’t - won’t strike twice in the same place ...

In normal times (in the past) :

A - This would not have happened

B - If it did happen we would find a substitute player; which is usually possible.

  • Covid-Time 2020 i- rural New South Wales - It/Is not possible.

  • Solution / Work-Around:

  • Do it yourself!

An artistically responsible action and, as with the original Covid-19 adaptation of my thesis methodology, a positive outcome (which will be announced w/ link soon).

However, regardless of any temporary excitement in presenting this solo response, I was generally stunned into silence; retreating into rabbit holes of philosophical contemplation.

Musical ensembles have lives of their own as relationships of aesthetic expression, performance knowledge and personal trust forged in the heat of performance.

It is, or at least for me has been, always an personal energetic - musical -

psychological shift / adoption / pivot whenever a player leaves an established group.

Never easy, but especially when its unexpected and unavoidable such as in this case; and not loosing just one player but to two groups in concert preparation.

In my long experience these things can / do occur for self developmental reasons (sic.); if only we can deduce them.

Deduction takes time and needs to be earned.
