WAGNER: Tuba Destiny w/ Dragon James Harvey – Producer/ presenter, Solo Tuba Basil Jones Hall, Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University, Brisbane Australia October 27, 2019 A Lecture Recital of leitmotivs from the opera Siegfried exploring Bass Materiality Presented in partial fulfilment to the requirements of a Doctor of Musical Arts A recital discourse focusing upon a musical revelation achieved by Richard Wagner in requiring the creation of a richer brass consort of wind bass instruments to realise his sonic vision in composing the Ring Cycle. The four Wagner tubas in Eb tenor and Bb bass, Bass trumpet, Contrabass trombone and the Contrabass tuba. The musical focus in this lecture recital is upon several significant low brass musical leitmotifs from the opera Siegfried. Through exploring the colourful and varied scoring apportioned, in these excerpts, to these brass bass instruments in sonically illustrating character and context, elucidating affective mood and effecting emotive response as dramatic information in Wagner’s revolutionary music dramas.
