Published Dec 30, 2020 James Harvey has performed with the Lismore Symphony Orchestra for the last seven years and is a past Vice -President of its orchestra board. A strong proponent of live classical performance and community music James also performs with the Queensland Wind Orchestra and the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. Since returning to active concert performance in 2013 James has attained a Master of Music Research, with his thesis: Elder Music, Instrumental Performance and Affirmative Aging from Queensland Conservatorium of Music. In addition, James is currently writing a Doctor of Musical Arts dissertation “Elucidating the Sound of It: A Performance Philosophy of Contrabass Tuba to Symphonic Wind Ensembles”. WAGNER: Tuba Destiny w/ Dragon James Harvey – Producer/ presenter, Solo Tuba Basil Jones Hall, Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University, Brisbane Australia October 27, 2019 A Lecture Recital of leitmotivs from the opera Siegfried exploring Bass Materiality Presented in partial fulfilment to the requirements of a Doctor of Musical Arts A recital discourse focusing upon a musical revelation achieved by Richard Wagner in requiring the creation of a richer brass consort of wind bass instruments to realise his sonic vision in composing the Ring Cycle. The four Wagner tubas in Eb tenor and Bb bass, Bass trumpet, Contrabass trombone and the Contrabass tuba. The musical focus in this lecture recital is upon several significant low brass musical leitmotifs from the opera Siegfried. Through exploring the colourful and varied scoring apportioned, in these excerpts, to these brass bass instruments in sonically illustrating character and context, elucidating affective mood and effecting emotive response as dramatic information in Wagner’s revolutionary music dramas. A video presentation - provocation created as On-line content for a seminar - "Inquiry as intervention: Confronting injustice, enacting change" - at the 2021 Griffith University Creative and Performing Arts Forum for Inquiry at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Filmed on location during an indefinite New South Wales Covid-19 Lock-down (sic.) and Queensland state border closure. A condition - situation - of being personally and creatively restricted with stay at home orders, 'on the farm' where we live, in the aboriginal Bungalung - Minjungbal traditional lands, in a valley called The Pocket at Billinudgel NSW Australia.
